Clean and Simple Web Design for Businesses

The World Wide Web was announced in 1994, and there are now valuable surveys of Web users that show a strong preference for clean and simple Web design.

A "clean" business website will be uncluttered and uncomplicated, with plenty of white margin space to the left and right of your content so that it's easy to read your text on a computer monitor. "Simple" means that your site must be easy to navigate, and require no more button clicking than is strictly necessary.

We will help you make intelligent Web design choices that are consistent with your goals, and that will make it easy for the search engines to catalog your site and send you people who are searching for your products or services. Our recent designs include sites for a commercial photographer and for a lacrosse camp:

We will explain your options in everyday English, and our Web design team will work with you to make sure that your website presents your products and services in a way that will increase your sales and income.

The Importance of Website Content

Because your content is much more important than your site’s graphic design, we help most of our clients develop just the right kinds of content for their sites.

If your site is easy to navigate and visually clean, you’ve taken care of the most important design issues. But if your content is deficient, a great design won’t help you. Your design is not a factor in the placement of your site on search engine results pages. Few visitors to your site will make a decision to stay-and-buy (or hit the “Back” button) based on your graphic design, unless it’s distracting or confusing. Most of them just want to see who you are and find out if you offer what they are looking for.

Content for Your Target Audiences

You will want to (1) describe your products and services; (2) show your target audiences how they will personally benefit from them; and (3) how they will benefit from buying them from you rather than from your competitors. Can you give visitors to your site a compelling reason to buy your products or services? Can you show them how their needs will be met if they do? What kinds of content will make your target audiences call you, order something on your site, and/or return to your site? If you can find just the right words to persuade your target audiences, you’ll be positioning yourself for success.

Content for the Search Engines

But don't forget about the search engines when you're developing content for your site. Your website should have precise, concise, search-term-rich text that will do two things: (1) turn visitors to your site into customers, and (2) make it easy for the search engines to identify and index your most important search terms when they “crawl” your site. The search engines are, in effect, another target audience.

Our most important advice: make your site an information source that is clearly better than what your competitors are offering, and be sure that your content includes each of the phrases — the search terms — that are most advantageous for you.

If your site has reliable information that is regularly updated, the search engines will eventually reward your efforts, and visitors to your site may bookmark it because it’s worth a return visit from time to time. If you stop updating your site, after a few months you may gradually get listed lower and lower on search engine results pages (that depends in part on how aggressive your competitors are). A website that doesn’t change will eventually be categorized by the search engines as abandoned.
