Domain Names
A domain name is a registered term used in the address of your Web site and e-mail; it is part of the Domain Name System (DNS).
For example, www.aicolorado.com and info@aicolorado.com are two uses of the domain name aicolorado.com.
Where to Buy Your Domain Name?
Allied Internet recommends that you buy your domain name from Go Daddy — the price is right and the service is reliable.
Geeky Facts Worth Knowing
- Every computer on the Internet has its own address — analogous to our telephone number or street address. An "Internet Protocol" (I.P.) address is actually just a string of four numbers (from 0 to 255) separated by a dot, 216.7.174.218, for example.
- The domain name is used instead of the I.P. address because it is easier to remember. Example: aicolorado.com takes you to the I.P. address 216.7.174.218.
- There are several domain name extensions, for example:
.com — refers to "commercial," but in practice is used for all kinds of sites
.net — intended for Internet administrative sites, but is used for many different kinds of sites
.edu — reserved for educational institutions
- .org — refers to "organization," principally non-profits
