Screen Resolution

The pixel width and height a computer's screen supports. Typical resolutions include 800x600, 1024x768, and 1680x1050. Larger monitors can handle larger screen resolution settings.


Search Engine

An Internet tool used to search for information on the Internet by entering key words and phrases into a search box. Search engines give you a list of Web pages that are related to the key words or phrases you entered. Google, MSN Search, and Yahoo! are popular search engines.


SEO

Search Engine Optimization refers to strategies intended to make your Web site more appealing to search engines, and and which give search engines a better understanding of the content of your site.


Server

A computer dedicated to a special purpose, for example, Web pages are located on a Web server, which often has a mail server associated with it.


Spyware

Software installed on your computer without your permission that secretly monitors what you do with your computer. Spyware can be relatively benign (a cookie tracking your Internet habits, for example) or malicious.


SSL Certificate

Secure Sockets Layer is the standard security technology for creating an encrypted link between a Web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the Web server and browser remains private and secure. E-commerce is almost always conducted using an SSL certificate.


Static Web Site

A Web site which is made up of HTML or other files which “sit” on the Web server waiting for you to ask for them. See “Dynamic Web Site.”

Telnet

A technology which allows one computer to use the Internet to log onto a computer at another location (down the hall or on the other side of Earth).


TIFF

Tagged Image File Format, administered by Adobe, are often very large files, but because they store a great amount of “information” are sometimes desirable for saving important photographs, for example.


Trackback

A mechanism used in connection with a blog entry to show a list of other blogs that refer to it.
