UNIX

A multi-user, multi-tasking computer operating system originally developed at Bell Labs during the early 1970s. Much of the Internet was run on "UNIX boxes" in the early days.


URL

The Universal Resource Locator for an item on the internet, which includes the protocol, path, page and other items that fully identify an item. For example: http://www.aicolorado.com/stuff/page.html.


User Name

Also “Login Name” or “User ID” — is used to access a computer system. People have a user name which they enter, when asked, to identify themselves to an online service, an Internet access provider, or a password-protected Web site. The user name is almost always accompanied by the password which must also be entered.

What is seen by some as a "second phase" of the World Wide Web, focusing on new approachs to creating and distributing content for Web sites, on communication between Web sites and site owners, and on a gradual decentralization of the right to share and re-use content.


Web Page

A document that is formatted according to accepted standards so that it can be viewed on the World Wide Web.


Web Site

A collection of Web pages linked together to make a single site.


WWW

The World Wide Web includes text files, multimedia files, and other network services interconnected by means of a system of hypertext documents. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) was created as a way to share data internationally, instantly, and inexpensively using HTML as a creative tool.
