- Mosaic 1.0, the first Web browser, was released by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Marc Andreessen was the lead developer.
- Summer 1994
- Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark (founder of Silicon Graphics) established Mosaic Communications
- October 1994
- Netscape 0.9
- November 1994
- Following a legal challenge by the University of Illinois, Mosaic Communications became Netscape Communications

- July 1995
- Internet Explorer 1.0 was released as part of the new Microsoft Windows 95 operating system
